3 Kids Found In Car Of Drugged Driver In Capital Region, Police Say

A 29-year-old man from the region is facing charges after allegedly driving high on drugs with children in the car, authorities said.

Michael Smith, age 29, was arrested Monday, Jan. 9, on suspicion of driving while high on drugs with three kids in the car in Watervliet.

Albany County resident Michael Smith, of Cohoes, was arrested following a traffic stop in Watervliet late Monday night, Jan. 9, according to Watervliet Police.

Officers stopped Smith at around 11:30 p.m. near 25th Street and Second Avenue for vehicle and traffic law violations.

An evaluation by the department’s Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) determined that he was impaired by drugs while driving, police said. Officers also found three children inside the vehicle.

Smith was released on an appearance ticket after being charged with the following crimes:

  • Three counts of aggravated DWI - Leandra’s Law
  • Three counts of endangering the welfare of a child
  • Operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs
  • Other vehicle and traffic law violations
